Overview

In an increasingly complex and transparent financial landscape, the effectiveness of a bank’s Board of Directors is defined not only by internal governance, but by its ability to engage credibly with external stakeholders - from supervisors and resolution authorities to international institutions and market analysts.

Recent supervisory experience - including insights from Alessandro Santoni’s 2025 ECB paper “On-site Inspections Benchmarking: Trends, Practices and Supervisory Effectiveness” (ECB Occasional Paper 375) and his book “Corporate Governance in the Banking Sector” - highlights how sound governance and open, trust-based communication are essential ingredients for effective oversight and crisis prevention.

This program examines the evolving dynamics of Board-level engagement, bridging prudential frameworks, governance practices, and behavioural supervision. Participants will gain a clear understanding of how supervisory and resolution frameworks operate, how external stakeholders form judgments about a bank’s resilience, and how boards can prepare for constructive, credible, and trust-based dialogue - whether with supervisors, resolution authorities, or market participants such as IMF/World Bank missions, rating agencies, auditors, and equity analysts.

The program blends conceptual foundations with real case studies, behavioural simulations, and communication exercises inspired by global supervisory practice. It aims to foster a culture of transparency, preparedness, and accountability, which is essential for navigating both calm and crisis periods
